Queer Theory (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Ben Trott

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 16:15 - 17:45 | 09.04.2020 - 09.07.2020 | Online-Veranstaltung | digitale Veranstaltung

Inhalt: This seminar introduces Queer Theory as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry shaped, among other phenomena, by Gay and Lesbian Studies, Transgender Studies, lesbian, Black and women of colour feminisms, psychoanalysis, activist coalitions galvanized by the HIV/AIDS crisis, Science and Technology Studies, materialist, critical and post-structuralist theory and philosophy, Cultural Studies, and more. It examines the social norms that produce and regulate sexuality and gender, our ideas about identity and sexual difference, the ways that these are contested, and how these norms are caught up with other axes of social difference as well as with questions of nation and of capital accumulation. The seminar critically engages with field-defining, and now canonical, works of Queer Theory as well as with more recent contributions. Issues explored include: questions of social philosophy as these relate to gender, sexuality, kinship and community; queer culture and sub-culture; hetero- and homo-normativity; the relationship between trans as well as queer politics and the question of rights and the law; intersectionality and queer of colour critique; the role of knowledge, discourse and power in the production of identity and identification; queer cultural production and ‘disidentification’; representation and recognition; LGBT activism and politics; the relationship between queerness and disability, as well as between queer and trans movements, histories and thought. We will engage with works by Judith Butler, Cathy J. Cohen, Ann Cvetkovich, Roderick A. Ferguson, Michel Foucault, Grace Kyungwon Hong, bell hooks, Robert McRuer, José Esteban Muñoz, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Susan Stryker, Dean Spade, and others.
