Inhalt: Kommunen bilden die kleinste Untersuchungseinheit im Staatsaufbau der BRD. Zugleich sind sie die Keimzellen unserer Demokratie. Gemeinden, Städte und Landkreise können als Selbstverwaltungskörperschaften auf eine lange Tradition zurückblicken. Dennoch ist diese Ebene einem steten Wandel im Rahmen von Funktional- und Strukturreformen unterworfen.

Party Government in Europe (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Michelangelo Vercesi

Inhalt: The course deals with a classic topic of Comparative Politics: the relationship between political parties and political executives in democratic systems. The subject is relevant in a twofold sense: because parties play a crucial role in making modern liberal-democracies work and because executives are central institutional producers of policy outputs. Along the seminar’s path, all the main aspects of party government will be addressed, from government formation to government termination. Attention will be payed to some challenges that parties face in contemporary democracies, such as trends of personalization and alternative forms of representation (populism and technocracy). The seminar will also focus on the salient issues of gender inequality in government and the role of parties as gate-keepers as well as the degree of party responsiveness across different countries.
