Inhalt: This course examines the interrelationship between society, power, and musical performance. While music is often romanticized as a universal medium that can bring people together, this course takes a more realist approach in order to better understand how music, sound, and performance are often used as a means of subjugation, coercion, propaganda, as well as resistance in milieus with discrepant power dynamics. For the purpose of this class, the term "conflict" is broadly conceived as social relations in which power is contested. We will discuss how musical expression is influenced by histories of class, racial, gender, and ethnic inequality and will explore the cultural responses to these issues through musical analysis. In addition to examining the influence of history upon contemporary culture, we will also consider the aftermath of conflict and the ways it can become engrained in cultural memory. Music can be useful in describing societal and cultural rifts more broadly, but this course goes one step further, positing that music making also interacts with and shapes the conflicts of which it is a part.
