Inhalt: Writing and publishing have always been important aspects of an academic career. However, increasingly the pressure to write and publish, in particular formats (e.g. peer-reviewed journals), has intensified. Journal publications now play an important, and some would argue distorting, role in shaping academic lives and the value of research, specifically those of early career researchers. This course aims to enable and empower students to negotiate the tensions and demands to publish, in relation to their own emerging research agenda and career trajectories; and gain an appreciation of the wider social and cultural contexts of academic publishing. This course will provide students with an understanding of the process of writing for, and publishing in, peer-reviewed journals, drawing from the lecturer’s experience and insights as an academic and reviewer, and the research literature on contemporary practices in universities. Students will gain a deeper understanding of trends and practices in academic publishing, such as quantification of ‘quality’ through metrics and ratings, open access, and the increasing dominance of ‘English language’ journals. Course outcomes and assessments To gain the most from the course, students will be required to engage with all core readings provided and participate in class activities and discussions. Sessions will be a blend of short lectures, classroom discussions and workshops. Students will be encouraged to discuss their views and connect the issues and themes of the module with their own emerging concerns and plans concerning publications. To receive a certificate for the Leuphana PhD- program, students will have to pass the following formal components of the course: Ø In-class presentation of the outlines of a possible article for publication (10mins) Students will briefly present the outline of a potential publication, its contribution to knowledge and relationship to the doctoral thesis, and its suitability for the chosen journal. Feedback will be provided on the coherence of the students’ presentation. This presentation will take place on the final day of the course. Ø Development of a brief publication plan Students will write a publication plan (1,200 max), reflecting on their doctoral research and the wider academic literature covered in the module. A publication plan can include the following: Identification of key themes or findings in the doctoral thesis that might be appropriate, or have the potential, for publication; The contribution to knowledge made by the publication/s; Selection of appropriate journals, and a reflection on the decision-making process; Reflection on how the selected publications impact on your research career.
