The Sociological Study of Culture (Seminar)

Inhalt: The double seminar (2 succeeding time slots on the same day) will be focussed on sociological perspectives addressing culture and cultural production. The literature (both mandatory and for further reading) in each session will cover (under specific topics) more canonical classic texts, more recently published texts and texts dedicated to the field of cultural production. In the sessions (after the introductory session), texts will be analysed and reflected which expose the differences (and commonalities) between cultural sociology, sociology of culture and cultural studies touching upon different notions of “society” and “culture”. The succeeding sessions present different perspectives in the sociological study of culture by focusing on how processes of inclusion and exclusion are organized (and result in, influence or are related to a.o. stratification, social inequality, and identity politics). The remaining seminar sessions will be dedicated to the analysis of specific concepts, settings and frameworks which influence and shape cultural production while taking a global stance: hybridity, internationality, eurocentrism, decolonization, conventions, and creativity.
