Classic Papers in STS (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Lisa Conrad

Termin:
14-täglich | Dienstag | 09:45 - 13:15 | 06.04.2021 - 09.07.2021 | HMS 231/232 | in room 205 on April 20th

Inhalt: Over the past 30 years the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) has emerged. By now, it has established itself as an essential approach to studying media and technology. In the seminar, we will read and discuss papers from STS that have evolved into classics. This means, they are taken up again and again by different authors and are thus turning into a shared reference point. These papers stand out because of their usefulness to other research projects: They develop concepts lending themselves particularly well to their application in other contexts. Or they introduce a convincing variation of established methods. Others could be seen as a successful provocation translating new paradigms into research practice.

Materialities of the Digital (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Sara Morais dos Santos Bruss

Termin:
14-täglich | Dienstag | 14:00 - 17:30 | 13.04.2021 - 06.07.2021 | HMS 205

Inhalt: Contemporary digital cultures have normalized metaphors implying that digital technologies are sovereign, self-actualizing agents, not bound to the material realities of humans and culture. This has consistently been the case at least since the birth of the computer, constructing an imaginary of new technologies as universal, immaterial, superior to the human. In contrast, feminist, critical race and environmental scholarship insists on the materiality of knowledge, the labour behind automation and the waste produced by the cloud. This seminar takes a look at the material conditions from which new technologies depart, and the socio-technical imaginaries employed to make them appear as the pristine solution to worldly problems. How can material histories be employed to navigate more equal, feminist, decolonial, sustainable technological futures?
