Music, Memory and Protest (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Thomas Sebastian
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 12:15 - 14:00 | 06.04.2021 - 09.07.2021 | C 16.109 /110 Seminarraum
Inhalt: This seminar will focus on the auditory dimensions of different forms of protest, asking how sounds and music contribute to, shape and form protests. On the one hand, it will deal with the 'sound' of protest marches and demonstrations in history and present. On the other hand, music and music videos that circulate explicitly in the context of protest situations will be examined. In the first half of the seminar we will develop methodological tools to analyze a variety of protest situations. While analytical models from sociology, sound and popular music studies will help us explore collective formations from a sonic-musical perspective, we will use approaches from cultural memory studies to understand the role memories play in protest and how they are applied. The second half of the seminar will be dedicated to examining protest formations in smaller research teams using the analytical models we have developed (and if necessary modified).
