Introduction to Qualitative Methods Gr. A (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Katarina Ristic

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 16:15 - 17:45 | 12.04.2021 - 05.07.2021 | Online-Veranstaltung

Inhalt: This course provides an introduction to the qualitative methods, following the whole research process - from an overview of theoretical approaches and their consequences in choosing different methods to methods of collecting material and analyzing the material. The first part of the course deals with different theoretical approaches addressing the relationship between methodology and methods, stressing the value of qualitative methods in constructivist and subjectivist research designs. The second part of the course deals with more practical aspects of research, starting with the literature review and development of the research question, definition of the unit of analysis, and some ideas on how to think about the main topic of research. As for the material collection methods, we will focus on the archives, interviews, and focus groups. Finally, the course deals with three major qualitative methods, namely content analysis, discourse analysis, and narrative analysis. For each of these methods, we will identify the main elements of analysis, explain the coding process, and categories, followed by one session where we will probe analysis together in the MaxQDA. Envisioned as an experiential learning course, Introduction to Qualitative Methods requires students' engagement and readiness to experiment with different ideas and formats.
