Inhalt: One of teachers’ primary roles is that of a designer of lesson plans. Lesson planning and evaluation are prerequisite to be an effective and efficient teacher. This course gives an overview of central issues in lesson planning, assessment of students’ learning, and evaluation of lessons. By the end of this course, participants will be able to develop lesson plans, create activities that produce measurable results, and evaluate lessons in ways that help them to become professional teachers.

Inhalt: According to the interests of participants, a number of video recordings of lessons from primary and secondary school classrooms will be shown and analysed. The evaluation of the lesson should provide first answers to the question "What is good foreign language teaching?" Participants will be asked to develop lesson plans themselves, and these will be discussed by the group.

Inhalt: Reading in the EFL classroom is a highly active, individual and constructive process. Certain strategies are required which differ significantly from those needed to read a text in the native language. This class provides an overview of learning strategies in foreign language reading, different approaches to instruction and the role of assessment. In a second step you will have the opportunity to plan a reading lesson and teach it to the other participants of the class.

Understanding and Teaching Texts (Seminar)

Inhalt: This seminar will deal with some of the linguistic and psycholinguistic underpinnings of text comprehension and then focus on the more practical tasks of finding (or creating, or adapting) reading or listening texts for use in the EFL classroom and developing tasks to assess understanding. Methodological approaches to the teaching of listening and reading texts will also be considered. The final planning will take into account the interests of participants: primary school students might want to include work with picture books, prospective teachers in secondary education might also get a chance to work with smaller fictional texts. The range of topics for this seminar might also include a glance at standardised tests of listening and reading comprehension (ESOL and other international tests as well as examples from the Vergleichsarbeiten developed by the IQB).
