Inhalt: In this course, students will delve into the core aspects of the platform economy related to funding and patronage mechanisms for culture, its theoretical approaches, empirical applications, and examples focused on cultural production and funding via online means. The course will develop examples related to (but not limited to) online patronage, crowdfunding and crowdsourcing, new intermediaries, and distribution of cultural content online. Special attention will be given to independent creators, small producers, and artists developing their careers through patronage, fandom, and online distribution of cultural content. As such, the program will focus on forms of organization currently happening in these mediums from the perspective of the artist or the organization. Evaluations will be based on group work and individual essays. Students will be encouraged to focus on applications to the various cultural sectors.
