Feminine Desire: Art and Politics (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Karen Benezra

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 16:15 - 17:45 | 04.04.2022 - 08.07.2022 | C 12.101 Seminarraum

Inhalt: “What does woman want?” asks Freud. This course will approach the question of sexuation from the perspective of desire and using the tools of psychoanalytic theory. By complementing key formulations by analysts including Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, and Willy Apollon, among others, with the study of works of art and the accounts of political movements, our seminar will inquire into the feminine in (patriarchal) culture and the formulation of a psychoanalytically informed ethics. The course will thus attempt to engage fundamental problems elaborated by psychoanalysis in a way that is approachable for students confronting psychoanalytic theory for the first time, from gender and the body to feminist politics and the exploitation of conventionally feminine or emotional labor. Special attention will also be paid to the role of the aesthetic in a specifically feminine formulation of sublimation. Respecting the seminar format, students are expected to engage in discussion by carefully preparing readings and questions or comments.
