Black Women Trailblazers in U.S. History and Culture (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Sabrina Völz
Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 17.10.2022 - 03.02.2023 | C 5.310 Seminarraum
Inhalt: For centuries, Black women have faced the double bind (race & gender) of oppression in the United States combined with other factors, such as class or age. With the exception of Rosa Parks, this resilient group has been ignored in EFL textbooks. In particular, we will look at the achievements and legacies of Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells, Ruby Bridges, Shirley Chisholm, Maya Angelou, bell hooks as well as their autobiographical works and/or selected representations in American culture (e.g., film, television series, monuments, literature, etc.). And while not all of these trailblazers lived to see their hard work brought to fruition, their efforts were not in vain.

Contemporary Canadian Culture: A Search for Identity (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Maria Moss
Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 17.10.2022 - 03.02.2023 | C 5.124 Seminarraum
Inhalt: Many of the texts written, read, and studied in Canada over the past two decades ask questions and challenge assumptions about the nature of Canada´s relationship with others: with minorities, with their direct neighbors (most specifically, the United States), with their Native populations, and with non-human others. Taking its cue from the collection of essays by Margaret Atwood, "Strange Things: The Malevolent North in Canadian Literature" as well as "Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature," we will explore contemporary Canadian culture and analyze the manifold ways in which it expresses a specifically “Canadian” identity.
