Approaches to Global Contemporary Art (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Ying Sze Pek

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 17.10.2022 - 03.02.2023 | C 11.307 Seminarraum | .

Inhalt: This seminar considers approaches to the writing of histories of contemporary art since 1989, primarily in Europe and the US, with a focus on current debates. In the three decades since scholars of Western art have aspired to transnational perspectives, how have they responded to the challenges of accounting for “art” and “contemporaneity” from a shared cultural framework? Have new forms of display and artists’ interventions at art and ethnographic museums and at global art biennials produced cosmopolitan spectatorial subjects, or reinscribed nationalisms and imperialisms? How have artists and scholars critiqued the politics of identity and representation central to artists’ projects in the 1980s and 1990s? How do we assess the figure of the nomadic curator associated with global exhibition circuits that first emerged in the 1960s and 1970s? We will discuss topics including the 1990s and late 2010s US “culture wars,” diasporic archives, the global art biennial as an institution, restitution and circulation, and the art of postmigration in Germany. Recent critical terms for writing art history from decolonial and anti-racist perspectives will be examined.
