BIPOC Women Trailblazers in U.S. History and Culture (GHR) (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Sabrina Völz

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 16.10.2023 - 02.02.2024 | C 5.311 Seminarraum

Inhalt: For centuries, BIPOC women have faced the double bind (race & gender) of oppression in the United States combined with other factors, such as class, age, or sexual orientation. With the exception of Rosa Parks and a few others, this resilient group has been largely been ignored in EFL textbooks. In this history course, we will look at the achievements and legacies of Indigenous Women HipHop Artists, Ida B. Wells, Rosa Parks, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Dolores Huerta, and Maya Lin as well as their autobiographical works and/or selected representations in American culture (e.g., film, television series, monuments, literature, etc.). Particular attention will be paid to intersectionality and the historical/cultural context in which these women lived. And while not all of these trailblazers lived to see their hard work brought to fruition, their efforts were not in vain.

The History, Arts, and Culture of the United States (LBS) (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Maria Moss

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 16:15 - 17:45 | 16.10.2023 - 02.02.2024 | C 1.005 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Since the United States is one of the most diverse places in the world with a vibrant political culture, an often controversial religious vigor, and an influential media and arts industry, in this seminar, we will approach our topics not only from a socio-cultural and historical point-of-view, but also listen to mainstream and marginalized voices that – encouraged by the social movements of the 1960s – enriched both the political debates and the literatures of North America.
