The Politics of the Global South (Seminar)

Inhalt: This is the course on the politics of the "Global South" from the perspective of International Relations. In the first part of the course, both the the conceptual and historical background of the emergence and identity formation of the "Global South" will be discussed. A critical look will always be taken at the ambiguity of the term and fundamental questions about the usefulness and justification of the term, but also about the shaping of (global) policy around the identity of the Global South. In the second part the course focuses on political and economic processes in a number of policy fields that are of particular importance for the "Global South", for example on topics such as the effects of historical marginalization, economic and political power (re)distribution, contested understandings of security and justice, etc. The the current debate about the rise of China, the BRICS and the role of the diverse Global South will also be addressed.
