Inhalt: What is a text and what is discourse - can we distinguish between grammatical texts and ungrammatical texts in the same way that we can distinguish between grammatical sentences and ungrammatical sentences, and in what respect are English texts and English discourse different to texts and discourse produced in different languages? The goal of this course is to examine English texts and English discourse in order to identify and discuss their underlying rules and regularities.

Inhalt: What is special about spoken English, and how does it differ from written English? The goal of this course is to examine spoken English, paying particular attention to the domains of • phonology: intonation, chunking and pausing • pragmatics: discourse markers and coherence • discourse analysis: openings and closings • sociolinguistics: social and regional accents
