Inhalt: In this seminar an extensive overview about research and debates on autocratization and democratization looking at the Global South will be given. How are democratic and authoritarian political regimes defined and measured? Which recent debates on autocratization and democratization exist? What have been main drivers of these processes since the early 1990s and what regional similarities and differences occurred? Which political systems around the globe persisted to the rise of democracy? And what are the tools of authoritarian leaders to stay in power? How do we understand and explain the recent resurgence of authoritarian politics? And what does this mean for the future of democracy in the Global South?
