Inhalt: This tutorial aims at exploring and synthesizing insights from second language acquisition research studies. It aims at involving the participants in their professional development by encouraging the reflection of their own second language learning processes and discussing issues, problems, and possibilities in foreign language teaching methodology. Theories of language learning (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: This seminar will cover different theoretical approaches to foreign language learning. We will briefly look at the ideas behind the behaviorist Audio-lingual Method and will investigate the criticism formulated by Chomsky and others, which in turn lead to new models of learning (or acquisition) processes through insights into the nature of learner languages, errors/mistakes etc. The major part of the semester, however, will cover aspects of learning theory like learner personality (including the age factor), affective factors like motivation, learning strategies, models of language competence as for example theories of listening/reading processes. Since theories of language also play a major role for communicative language teaching, the last phase of this class will be dedicated to a very brief glance at the linguistic underpinnings of this didactic approach.
