The Peace Palace, home of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), is filling up. While traditionally, proceedings tended to oppose one claimant and one respondent State, there is a move towards multi-party litigation, characterised by joint applications, strategic interventions and an increasing use of advisory proceedings. What prompts this move to multi-party litigation? How does the Court deal with it? And what does it tell us about the role of the Court?
