The World University Ranking takes into account a total of 18 performance indicators, which are divided into five areas: teaching, research, citations, international orientation, and third-party funding from industry. The evaluation was based on data from around 175 million citations from 18.7 million research publications, surveys of more than 100,000 scientists from around the world on the reputation of universities in research and teaching, and statistical surveys provided by the universities. The ranking took into account 2,191 research-intensive universities from 115 countries.

As in previous years, the current international ranking list is led by the University of Oxford in the UK. The best German university in the international comparison is the Technical University of Munich, ranked 27th worldwide.
