Inhalt: This course on Professional Discourse and the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classroom deals with three recent developments and their impact and implications on the teaching of ESP. These include a) the emergence of genre analysis within the field of discourse analysis as a means to investigating above all written texts, b) the communicative approach to language learning and teaching which demands genuine examples of language use and c) technological advances and the emergence of the field of corpus linguistics. We first look at genre analysis, a method of analysing texts as hierarchies of functional units on a macro- and micro-structural level, and subsequently at genre pedagogy. We also investigate how corpora can be used in genre analysis and how both genre analysis and corpus analysis may be incorporated in the language classroom. Theoretical approaches are applied to a selection of texts, e.g. letters of complaints, job application letters, payment request letters, promotional letters, and cross-cultural differences are also discussed and analysed. Part of the course will involve a project in co-operation with the Berufsbildende Schule I des Landkreises Lüneburg. Within the framework of this project, students will investigate the applicability of genre analysis for ESP teaching. The choice of genre focused on will depend on the needs of the BBS I class.
