Inhalt: The planetary boundary for novel entities has been exceeded due to the global increase in the production, use of chemicals and lack of capacities for their hazard assessment. Furthermore, some chemicals have adverse side effects on humans and the environment due to their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation potential and (eco)toxicity. In this seminar and exercise, different concepts and tools in green and sustainable chemistry for the design and assessment of chemicals are introduced to discuss how chemistry can contribute to sustainable development. Experimental and computer-based methods are applied to demonstrate the advantageous possibilities of their combination in the assessment of chemicals but also challenges on the way to sustainability.
