Inhalt: In this course, we will take a critical look at the concept of culture and the role that this concept has played in philosophical and also anthropological, sociological, and biological discourses, focusing, in particular, on the nature/culture as well as the nature/nurture dichotomy. We will explore writings from from authors such as Darwin, Nietzsche, and Simone de Beauvoir, as well as more contemporary authors such as Timothy Ingold, Sara Ahmed and Judith Butler to examine how nature informs culture and vice versa. What might be problematic about the concept of culture? How might culture contribute to the processes both of identity formation and othering? How might we able to get beyond the nature/culture dichotomy?

Thinking Cities and Societies (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Paul Matthews

Termin:
14-täglich | Freitag | 14:15 - 17:45 | 27.10.2023 - 02.02.2024 | C 12.105 Seminarraum

Inhalt: What is a city? How does a city change and develop? What makes a city good or desirable? In this course, we will take a tour through some of the various urban spaces which populate philosophical discourse and thereby address certain fundamental questions related to the city and urban environments. Beginning with Plato and Aristotle, we will chart a course through the works of Simmel, Benjamin, Heidegger, Lefebvre, Jacobs, Butler, hooks, and others, to take up and explore questions related to the city and society more generally. A significant part of the course will be dedicated to unpacking the complexities of social evolution and/or change and inquiring into the roles that we, as civic actors or agents, have to play in bringing about such change.
