Inhalt: Although many like to speak of a globalized world, of a world in which the boundaries and the distances between peoples, countries and cultures are collapsing, it would seem that borders, walls, and boundaries of all types (conceptual, invisible, and physical) are being erected at a greater rate today than at any other time in recent history. In this course, we will consider the societal and cultural forces and pressures, that are driving these developments, focusing on notions of sovereingty, security, identity, and asylum. To help us get a sense of the field, we will be engaging with the work of Schmitt, Arendt, Derrida, Foucault, and Wendy Brown, among others, working at the intersections of philosophy, political science, critical theory, and geography.
