Gilbert & Sullivan: Satire & Song (Seminar)

Inhalt: W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a British author-composer duo of highly popular comic and satirical operettas in the 19th century, whose influence continues to resonate today. This seminar, run by Rebecca Lang, Director of Music at the University, and Emer O'Sullivan, Professor of Literature at the Institute of English Studies, will take an interdisciplinary approach to all facets of their joint musical and textual output and its reception. Gilbert and Sullivan collaborated for over 25 years, starting in 1871, and together they created a total of fourteen comic operas which remained popular for more than a century. They changed both the content and form of musical theatre and showed that social issues and politics could be addressed in a witty way, poking fun at the establishment and social rankings. They are rightly seen as the forerunners of our modern musicals. In this seminar we will briefly look at their predecessors, but will focus on the duo, the context in which they were working, and their most important operattas. We will also engage with the many ways in which they influenced popular culture in the English-speaking world today from advertisements, through countless parodies, to featuring in the likes of the Muppet Show, The Simpsons and Star Trek.

Kammermusikprogramm (Praxisprojekt)

Inhalt: Haben Sie Lust auf Ensemblespielen 'klein aber fein'? Sie haben schon Menschen gefunden mit den Sie musizieren wollen, wissen aber nicht was es für Repertoire Möglichkeiten gibt? Sie haben schon ein bestehendes Kammensemble und könnten von Workshops mit Expert*innen profitieren? Oder Sie würden gerne Kammermusik spielen, wissen aber nicht mit wem? Dann melden Sie sich an für das neue Kammermusikprogramm der Leuphana! Wir treffen uns einmal am Anfang des Semesters um Besetzungen und Repertoire zu besprechen und organisieren. Dann üben und proben Sie mit Ihrem Ensemble das ganze Semester lang, wann und wie Sie wollen. In der zweiten Hälfte des Semesters gibt es ein intensives Probenwochenende mit Spezialist*innen vom Fach. Als Semesterabschluss treten Sie mit Ihrem Ensemble beim Kammermusik Salon auf. Have you already found people with whom you'd like to play but are not sure what repertoire is out there to choose from? Do you already have a chamber ensemble and could benefit from workshops with experts? Or would you really like to play chamber music but are not sure who to ask? Then sign up for the new Leuphana Chamber Music Programme! We will meet once at the beginning of the semester to discuss and organise ensemble combinations and repertoire. Together with your ensemble, you will practise and rehearse throughout the semester, when and how you please. In the second half of the semester there will be an intensive rehearsal and workshop weekend with industry professionals as mentors and tutors.
