Critical Social Research in Cultural Studies: Transdisciplinary Approaches, Problems and Methods (Seminar)
Dozent/in: John Yves Pinder
Termin:
wöchentlich | Montag | 18:15 - 19:45 | 13.10.2025 - 30.01.2026 | C 14.201 Seminarraum | Beamer
Inhalt: The seminar aims to introduce participants to aspects of the tradition of British cultural studies and the modalities of research deployed in some of the seminal works produced by members of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in Birmingham during the 1960s and 1970s including Paul Willis, Stuart Hall and Angela McRobbie. Participants will learn about the history of cultural studies and its relation to Marxist, feminist theories as well as theorizations of racism. As part of this process, students will also have the opportunity to learn about distinct qualitative methods including the uses of theory, participatory observation, interviews and discourse analysis. As well as imparting knowledge regarding methods, the seminar convenor will support students in designing collective research projects aiming to investigate a chosen social issue critically, drawing on but also intertwining disciplinary specialisms. The questions guiding the seminar are as follows: 1. How did British cultural studies constitute a form of transdisciplinary critical social research in the 1960s and 1970s? 2. What historical role does Marxist 'theory' play in the development of cultural studies? 3. How might some of its methodological tools and approaches inspire collective social research today?
