Inhalt: Writing About Dance examines the different ways in which dance has been written about and discussed, from the eighteenth century to today, and from newspapers to digital culture. Given that dance writing is not confined to academic journals and textbooks, this module explores the manifold forms of written and visual communication — including journalism, television, exhibitions, and film — and how such communication has not only shaped the discipline of dance over the years but has also been shaped by dance. As such, this module is designed to at once develop students’ capacities to reflect critically on the multiple factors that inform dance writing and, in so doing, cultivate their own critical voice. As students read and discuss the different types of ‘text’ produced for and by dance, they will ultimately write their own reviews of dance performances, be they ‘live’ and in-person or pre-recorded and online. These reviews will also range in form, from traditional dance criticism to creative responses, thus flexing the full range of students’ critical and creative faculties.
