Approaching museums as sites of culture and organization (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course will approach museums as sites of organizational practices and struggles around the (re)presentation, negotiation and reflection of culture. The first session will be held online and will familiarise students with the structure of the course. PART I The following four distinct themes, which are fundamental to understanding museums as sites of culture and organization, will form the focus of each session: A) Audience development and heterogeneous communities (Max) B) Space and atmospheres (Duygu) C) Politics of curatorial practices (Duygu) D) Digitalisation and digital cultures (Max) PART II Parallel to the lectures, students will form research groups to conduct their own empirical investigations of museums as sites of culture and organization. Groups may focus on specific museums, cases, sites, initiatives, or exhibitions. Fieldwork may include on-site visits, interviews, participant observation, or other qualitative methods. The aim is to explore how the four themes manifest in the everyday practices of museums. The groups will present their findings at a concluding research conference, in the form of a mini-exhibition.

Kunst- und Kulturorte als urbane Möglichkeitsräume: Ethnographisch-künstlerische Annäherungen (Projektseminar)

Inhalt: In diesem Seminar nehmen wir Kunst- und Kulturorte als Ausgangspunkt unserer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Urbanen. Als Räume, in denen kulturelle Praktiken verhandelt und städtische Lücken gestaltet werden, eröffnen sie besondere Perspektiven auf die Stadt. Dabei stellen wir die Fragen: Wo und wie entstehen kulturelle Möglichkeitsräume im urbanen Raum? Und: Welche Rolle spielt das Dazwischen – jene zeitlich und räumlich begrenzten Zwischenräume – für kulturelle Organisation und Praxis? Diesen Fragen nähern wir uns ethnografisch: Mit Methoden wie teilnehmender Beobachtung, Mapping, Zeichnung oder Fotografie erforschen wir urbane Orte und bringen unsere Beobachtungen, Fragen und Impulse in den Kunstraum ein. Zum Abschluss des Seminars werden die Forschungsergebnisse in Form kreativer Formate sichtbar gemacht und präsentiert.
