Literature and Translation (Seminar)

Inhalt: The act of translation is at the centre of most acts of cultural transfer, and the study of translation – especially literary translation – has developed in many countries since the 1970s to become a separate and specialized field of research. In this seminar we will analyse different forms of literary translation and develop criteria for a critical analysis of translated texts, we will also look at institutional aspects of literary translation (what is translated from which languages, by whom and under what conditions). The theories and methodology of Translation Studies will be a focus of this seminar; together with other fields of study (gender studies, post-colonial studies) they have contributed towards developing comparative literary studies in the direction of trans-cultural studies. Most, but not all, of the translations we will be examining will be from German into English or vice versa. Students who wish to give a presentation or write a term paper on translations from or into other languages are very welcome.

Über Arbeit schreiben - Schreiben als Arbeit. Arbeitsdiskurse in der Literatur um 1900 (Seminar)

Inhalt: Bereits in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts werden die neuen Arbeitsformen der modernen Industriegesellschaft zum beliebten Thema der schönen Literatur. In Romanen, Theaterstücken, Reportagen und Reiseberichten werden bestimmte Formen von Tätigkeit beschrieben, reflektiert und mithin kritisiert. Die Literatur bleibt hier jedoch nicht lange stiller Beobachter: die Darstellungen des modernen „animal laborans“ (Hannah Arendt) schlägt zurück auf das Selbstbild der SchriftstellerInnen und das Verständnis der eigenen Schreibarbeit. Spätestens um 1900 werden so überkommene Vorstellungen literarischer Autorschaft ersetzt oder zumindest transformiert. Ein detaillierter Semesterplan findet sich unter "Material".
