Inhalt: This course on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) deals with three recent developments and their impact and implications for teaching ESP. These include a) the emergence of genre analysis within the field of discourse analysis as a means to investigating above all written texts, b) the communicative approach to language learning and teaching which demands genuine examples of language use and c) technological advances and the emergence of the field of corpus linguistics. We investigate the applicability of genre analysis, a method of analysing hierarchies of functional units on a macro- and micro-structural level, and also of corpus linguistics for analyzing texts and for teaching in the area of ESP and we also investigate how corpora can be used in genre analysis and how both may be incorporated in the language classroom. Theoretical approaches are applied to a wide range of texts, such as job application letters, book blurbs, promotional letters and letters of complaint and cross-cultural differences are also discussed and analysed. Part of the course will involve a project in co-operation with the Berufsbildende Schule I des Landkreises Lüneburg.Within the framework of this project, students will investigate the applicability of genre analysis for classes of different proficiency levels.

Dozent/in: Anne Barron

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 08:15 - 09:45 | 14.10.2013 - 31.01.2014 | C 5.325 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Indian English, Irish English, British English, New Zealand English, English as a Lingua Franca, English as an International Language, ......: The existence of such terms prompts the question as to the status of these varieties also as to what variety/ varieties of English should be taught in the language classroom. This course examines the huge diversity of the English language in society and the role which English plays in today's world. In the second half of the course, focus will turn to a linguistic analysis of form and function focusing in particular on regional variation in language use, and specifically on variation across national varieties of English. Both theoretical and methodological issues form an important part of the course. Students are required to conduct empirical research primarily using corpora. The course will be conducted through English.
