Inhalt: After a short introduction to the main ecosystem processes (EPs) of the main biomes on Earth we focus on herbivory, decomposition, and predation in temperate and subtropical realms. We highlight the impact of biodiversity (species and genetic diversity and the functional diversity of guilds) on the modulation of these EPs and the related ecosystem services (e.g. prevention of fire and soil erosion). The effect of large scale patterns of biodiversity on EPs is discussed in detail. At a practical level we have two approaches: (a) to organize a discussion with representatives of NGOs (e.g. Naturschutzpark Lüneburger Heide or Society for the Protection of Nature and Natural Resources in Israel) and/or authorities on the protection of biodiversity and the related EPs and ESs they provide; (b) to analyse food web structures based on field samples in the laboratory. There will be an option to join an excursion into the Middle East (in March 2014; see below).
