The emphasis is on mass involvement in politics and its social, cultural, and institutional underpinnings. Most mandatory readings are included in the Oxford Handbook of Political Behavior.

Since mass involvement into politics is most intense in democracies, the social and cultural underpinnings of the democratic process—and of democracy itself—are in the focus of our attention.
