"Hausarbeiten" and Essays in English (Workshop)

Inhalt: This workshop will provide participants with the chance to start preparing for their written assignments in English. Participants can bring in drafts of their work to the workshop and get feedback from other participants as well the instructor. Also, the workshop will go over ways to successfully structure an academic text in English, to present your arguments, to integrate quotes and paraphrases, and to construct clear and concise syntax in English. We will take a lunch break from 12:30-13:00 Uhr, so feel free to bring your own lunch.

In this workshop, we will review some basic grammar and syntax rules (and yes, commas and punctuation will be part of that, too!) and have plenty of opportunity to practice via various examples provided during the workshop. We will also focus on some basic ways to structure sentences in English, especially as some of these ways differ from the way we write in German. SIGN-UP via myStudy will start October 21. We will take a short lunch break from 12:30 -13:00 Uhr, so bring some lunch with you if you like.

Inhalt: This is a workshop for students interested in formal (political and academic) debate where students will in collaboration with two Leuphana instructors and with an incoming guest instructor and former debate coach from the US research and exercise debate styles and systems. In the end, we want to stage a successful debate and create a debate platform and team for Leuphana that could continue in the coming semesters under the tutelage of Dr.May and colleagues at the ZEMOS. This is a workshop environment where we all learn together. This is a new experience for the Leuphana instructors as well. We will learn along side with you and cooperatively. And of course, this is supposed to be a fun event!

Individual Writing Consultations (Studienbegleitende Veranstaltung)

Inhalt: During the Winter Semester 2013-14, the Writing Center offers weekly office hours for students who wish to receive feedback on their writing. Students can sign up for these office hours via myStudy. If all the time slots are taken, please contact us directly at writingcenter@leuphana.de, and we will try our best to accommodate you. You can find office hours in myStudy for the following three people: Dr. Isabell May (Writing Center Director) Lisa-Sophie Kinne (Student Writing Consultant) Tobias Lösche (Student Writing Consultant) Please read the directions below so that you schedule an appointment with the appropriate person. Appointments for Bachelor& Master’s Students Bachelor students who are working on written assignments for courses they are taking (“Hausarbeiten,” essays, et al.) can schedule individual consultations with the Writing Center’s Student Writing Consultants Lisa-Sophie Kinne and Tobias Lösche starting the end of October. Please check Lisa’s and Tobias’ office hours on myStudy. Master’s students who are writing essays or other assignments in one of their courses can schedule appointments with Dr. May via her myStudy office hours. Bachelor Theses If you have decided to write your bachelor thesis in English, congratulations! This is an exciting and valuable opportunity to deepen your English skills. If you want support with your thesis, we advise that you contact Dr. May as early in the process as possible (ideally once you have a finite deadline for submission) to work out a schedule for your revision process. Of course, feel free to contact Dr. May at any time of the writing process, but please be advised to schedule your appointments as early as possible in order to get the most useful and detailed feedback. If you are writing mostly or even exclusively in English, the Writing Center is excited to support you during any stage of the writing process. As master’s theses and dissertation projects are fairly lengthy and often can be very specialized, we advise you to contact Dr. May as early as possible to work out a schedule for your revision process. Introduction to Scholarly Publishing: How to Get Published in Scientific Journals (Workshop)

Inhalt: Chris Tancock, publisher of Linguistics & History Journals with Elsevier, Oxford, England, will be giving a 2-hour workshop on how to get published on English-speaking scientific journals. The Writing Center for Academic English in the ZeMoS is hosting this interactive and informative workshop. Chris has given this and similar workshops at different conference at universities all over Europe, and we are pleased to give Leuphana Ph.D. students the opportunity to benefit from his experience in the publishing business. This workshop is particularly relevant and interesting for Ph.D. students in cultural studies, political science, and linguistics, as Chris has a lot of experience with those areas, but it is also open for Ph.D. students from other disciplinary backgrounds. Faculty and staff as well as Master students are also welcome to attend if there are enough spots left. Please contact Dr. May if you are interested. In addition to the morning session from 10-12, Chris will also be available for individual appointments of up to 30 minutes if participants would like direct feedback on their projects.

Writing Academic Essays (for Master's Students) (Workshop)

Inhalt: This workshop is geared towards 1st year master's students in the Management & Entrepreneurship program, but is open to other master's students as well. This workshop will expose you to some basic tips and strategies to structure and write an academic essay in English, especially for the two classes in English that 1st year Master's students in the Management & Entrepreneurship program have to take. We will review a few examples of successful essays to analyze what kinds of text and argument structure might be most useful for your essays.
