Inhalt: Enrique Dussel, a philosopher born in Argentina, is a world-philosopher in the best sense of the word. He has travelled and studied wide and far, and his philosophy of liberation has global importance. He is a ‘dangerous’ philosopher, because his ideas and political provocation make people think. The fact that he had to migrate to Mexico in the 1970s after an attempt on his life was made in Argentina, is testament to that. Dussel’s magnum opus “Ethics of Liberation” was originally published in 1998 and finally translated and published in English in 2013. Dussel’s is a work of our times and for our times: Globalization, as the ultimate consequence of the modernity, appears as an idea that is full of promises in theory while its realization seems guided by a textbook version of Western neo-liberal capitalism. Dussel argues for an ethics that challenges the Western roots of modernity, and builds instead on a genuine world-history of ethics. In the course of the meetings, we want to approach this book through a close reading, and discuss in detail its ideas, its roots, and consequences. Participants are encouraged to conduct their own research into literatures and ideas mentioned in the book, as well as coming up with case studies and thought experiments, and present their results to the class. This is, however, voluntary, since this course is not eligible for credit. Therefore, there are no participation requirements, exams, term papers, or grades. However, I would urge everybody to read the individual chapters for each meeting, for otherwise such a course makes no sense. We will have up to 14 meetings. Each meeting should address about half of one of the six chapters of the book.
