Dozent/in: Joachim Merz

Inhalt: General content, aim and overview Quantitative results do support the argument in any discussion. This course will provide important methods for targeted quantitative analyses in the field of Public Economics, Law and Politics by five blocks: 1 Mathematical methods for applied empirical analyses (3) 2 Compressing information: Descriptive statistics (3) 3 From samples to the population: Hypothesis testing and significance (1) 4 Controlling influence: Linear regression and extensions (4) 5 Policy evaluation: Microeconometric Program evaluation and Micro- and Macrosimulation (3) 1 Mathematical methods for applied empirical analyses In the first part of this lecture you will learn/repeat about the basics of mathematical methods useful for applied empirical analyses (quantifying relations by functions with various independent variables, differentiation and extreme values, constrained optimization). 2 Compressing information: Descriptive statistics Compressing information/describing mass data is the focus of descriptive statistic indicators which describe a survey’s result and a population (histograms, mean, median, variance, skewness, curtosis, concentration and inequality, correlation). 3 From samples to the population: Hypothesis testing and significance How to deal with sample results to say something about the population behind includes handling of stochastics, hypothesis testing and the significance of a sample’s result (confidence intervals and parameter testing of means, fractions etc.). 4 Controlling influence: Linear regression and extensions With Regression analysis the influence of variables when explaining some phaenomenon can be quantified and thus is an important tool for understanding behaviour and uncovering underlying structures (linear regression, Ordinary Least Squares, diagnostics, testing the assumptions, extensions for discrete choice a (Logit, Probit) 5 Policy evaluation: Microeconometrics and Micro- and Macrosimulation Policy evaluation is asking about the impacts of alternative programs/measures (microeconometric program evaluation by propensity score matching, microsimulation by static and dynamic aging, macrosimulation, evaluation indicators). Computing Applied quantitative methods to handle is the aim of the course, so applications are important. Therefore practical exercises with program packages like SPSS, STATA etc. and EXCEL will further support the topic and the learning progress.
