In recent years more and more political scientists have debated to what extend leading candidates can influence citizens vote choices in parliamentary elections. Together with the current debates on personalisation of politics and the presidentialisation of parliamentary systems, the influence of single top politicians seems to be stronger than ever. Still the question remains how strong the influence of leading candidates on the vote choice actually is and if their influence has changed over time. In the beginning of this seminar we will discuss basic theories of voting behaviour, the role of party identification and the relationship between candidates and parties. During the second half of the seminar we analyse and discuss empirical articles which seek to measure the influence of leading candidates on vote choice.
