Software Industries (Stream A) (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Paula Bialski, Yoav Flam

Termin:
14-täglich | Donnerstag | 09:45 - 13:15 | 18.10.2018 - 01.02.2019 | HMS 139

Inhalt: How do economic processes intertwine with digital media? This course attempts to answer this question by understanding the logics of software production. Your teachers - an ethnographer of corporate software developers as well as a manager of a large-scale software project will help unpack this question from their own experiences in the field. Organizing a software project is a complex and challenging process. The complexity of this process stems from the variety of economic, organisational, technical, geographic and social factors that influence the software product itself. For example, a software project is commissioned by a company that expects the project to be finished at a certain deadline, the labourers who build the software are distributed globally, the software as a product constantly breaks down and requires maintenance, and due to industry demands, a software project can constantly shift its scope and purpose. Software is also not just one ‘thing,’ but relies on other types of software which assist in building software, maintaining servers, and organizing the people to build this software. In order to understand the economy of digital media, this course will help unpack the various dimensions of how software is built, helping students gain an understanding of the mutual interdependence of digital media and economical processes.
