Inhalt: This course is dedicated to the field of Infrastructure Studies. On the one hand, infrastructures are very concrete phenomena, such as electricity grids or sewerage systems. On the other hand, media phenomena can be described as infrastructures. An infrastructural approach to media implies an orientation towards materiality, history and politics. As John Durham Peters has noted, “infrastructuralism” is a longstanding, but currently rediscovered development in media research.
Automation, Aesthetics and Narrative (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Robert Samuel Hughes Rapoport
Termin:
Einzeltermin | Do, 18.10.2018, 14:00 - Do, 18.10.2018, 17:30 | HMS D22
14-täglich | Donnerstag | 14:00 - 17:30 | 25.10.2018 - 22.11.2018 | HMS 231 + 232
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 14:00 - 17:30 | 29.11.2018 - 13.12.2018 | HMS D22
Inhalt: In this class, we explore how our consumption of media is changing. Triangulating between automation, aesthetics, and narrative we will orient to new models of cultural change. Contained in this inquiry are our evolving notions of immersion, interactivity, linearity, mimesis/simulation and montage. Our discussions will also ask how basic ideas from systems thinking,--positive and negative feedback--are increasingly relevant in the aesthetic realm.
