Speaking Out: Communicating in Academia. Englisch ab B2.2 (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this seminar you will have an opportunity to improve your ability to participate in seminars taught in English, whether here at the Leuphana or during a semester abroad. Using exemplary academic texts we will examine how spoken and written language works, with the goal of transferring this knowledge to your own writing. The course will involve three separate writing projects and a number of opportunities to give mini-presentations. The course is also suitable for students who do not wish to receive credit points and/or can only attend one of the sessions.

Inhalt: In this course we will focus on writing in professional contexts. We will not be able to examine genres specific disciplines or professions (such as legal briefs or advertising copy) although you could choose to do this in your final essay. Instead we will focus on such aspects as clarity and concision, register and appropriateness, explanation and persuasion. Writing will be based on case studies about commonplace work situations. After a close reading and discussion, you will practice writing reports detailing the facts of the case and the reasons for the decision you took.
