Inhalt: This seminar is focused on the study of transformational festivals and event-cultures. It provides insight into a past study of psytrance festivals and an ongoing research project within this area: Burning Progeny, a four-year multi-sited ethnography of European events built around the principles of Burning Man (https://burningprogeny.org). As the prototypical transformational event, Burning Man has evolved from a festival held annually in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, into a self-organising transnational movement. Now in its final year, the Burning Progeny project takes advantage of mixed research methods, including participant observation at various European events, interviewing, as well as two surveys with quantitative and qualitative components conducted in 2014 and 2017. The seminar focuses on the methodological aspects of these studies with a hands-on approach. You will gain access to empirical material such as field journal, interview transcripts and survey data. You will be asked to contribute to the data analysis by forming study groups, as well as individually working on an end-of-term project that will be presented during the oral examinations.
