Inhalt: COURSE DESCRIPTION With the increasing human pressure on ecosystems and natural landscapes, one of the main challenges is to design and develop management actions that supports the preservation of biodiversity, ecosystem services and human wellbeing, in particular food security. A central theme here is to integrate the ecological dimension with the socio-cultural dimension in order to create sustainable landscapes and equitable societies. Therefore, this module does not only focus on biodiversity, but also on human societies and their needs of food security. During the seminar we will examine why we conserve biodiversity and what are the key basic elements and process to look at in order to design conservation policies that lead to food security.

Dozent/in: Julia Leventon

Termin:
wöchentlich | Freitag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 01.04.2019 - 05.07.2019 | C 6.321 Seminarraum

Inhalt: This course focuses on the topic of governance of place for sustainability. Places are framed as social and physical constructs. Governance refers to the multi-level politics, polity and policies that influence the construction of place, the specific sustainability challenges experienced there, and their management. The seminar explores how physical, social and political realms interact to shape sustainability outcomes in specific locations. We will therefore explore theories from a range of disciplines, including geography, sociology, political science and the natural sciences in order to understand how each contributes to understanding (and solving) sustainability problems. We will examine real-world examples of sustainability problems and their solutions through these various viewpoints.
