Inhalt: Louis Althusser suggests art allows us to see, perceive, and feel the ideology that produces it and to which it alludes. In doing so, he argues that art produces a distinct kind of knowledge about our social and psychic conditions of existence and the way we relate to them. The course will examine theoretical, visual, and cinematographic texts with the hopes of defining art, ideology, and the register of knowledge, experience, or perception at stake in Althusser’s affirmation. Class readings will be culled from the fields of Marxist and structuralist art and literary theory, psychoanalysis, and Marxist social thought. We will also consider video, film, and painting both as illustrations of such theories and as modes of non-theoretical approaches to the same questions.
