Inhalt: Die Vorlesung gibt Studienanfängern einen systematischen Überblick über die wichtigsten Teilgebiete des Faches (Politische Theorie, Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft, Internationale Beziehungen). Political Sociology (Seminar)

Inhalt: Political science, and in particular comparative politics, owes many of its concepts and approaches to a number of famous sociological thinkers such as Max Weber (legitimacy), Robert Michels (oligarchy), Anthony Giddens (modernism), Talcott Parsons (political support), James Coleman (social capital), etc. This is why “political sociology” is not so much a subject unto itself, but rather a heading under which to study this inheritance and to master its notions and ideas. The aim of this seminar is therefore to introduce students to some of these fundamental works as well as to show the mutual influences among their main concepts. It will be divided into three main parts: power, elites and society at large. First we will examine how power has been studied through different periods as well as epistemological approaches. Is power ‘hegemony’, ‘domination’, ‘legitimacy’, ‘attraction’? Is power structural or consensual? How can one resist power? Secondly we will study elites—both their existence and evolution in society. We will analyze both classic authors as well as more applied research concerning the structure of elites and their influence in society. Thirdly, we will look at society at large, i.e. modernity and post-modernity. In particular, we will ask how these notions are reflected in epistemology, political leadership, citizenship, multiculturalism and gender awareness.
