Conceptual histories of Digital Times (Seminar)

Inhalt: We understand our 'digital' lives through concepts which may seem neutral but are as artificial as the machines and systems they name. Words such as 'computer', 'information', 'internet', 'artificial intelligence', 'feedback', 'security' and 'cyber'. Terms whose meaning we might perhaps leave to engineers, but which have been invented and shaped by historical transformations and collective imaginations that are far from just technical. This seminar will explore the conceptual histories of the key terms of our digital vocabularies. It will engage discursively and critically with histories and historically significant texts, technical source material and theoretical reflections, so as to better understand the times that we live in, and facilitate a more intentional engagement with them.
