Inhalt: In recent years there have been repeated calls for common European policies in the area of migration and asylum, suggesting that there is as of yet little EU integration in this policy area. At the same time, the EU is often criticised for its restrictive approach to migration. This course will take stock of the policies which the EU has adopted in the areas of asylum and so-called irregular migration since the early 2000s, also engaging with the on-going reform of the ‘Common European Asylum System’. Key questions that we will address, include: What explains the level of protection for migrants provided by EU directives in this area? Why have EU asylum policies stirred so much controversy at the EU level? And how does EU law in this policy area affect domestic policies and politics? Theoretically, we will engage with discussions on regulatory competition, liberal constraints, politicisation and populism in EU policymaking as well as Europeanization and compliance in policy implementation.
