Inhalt: Language learning strategies can be defined as specific techniques, actions, or forms of behavior students consciously or unconsciously use to master a foreign language. Research suggests that training students to use language learning strategies can improve their language skills, strategy awareness and help to build up learner autonomy. Participants will be involved in exercises, discussions, and model lessons to obtain experience with implementing language learning strategies.

Learning strategies and teaching (Seminar)

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 31.03.2009 - 30.06.2009 | C 4.215 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Current foreign language learning theory claims that a teacher's influence on learning processes is limited and that learners have to accept responsibility for successful language learning (or acquisition). In this seminar we will briefly up-date participants' knowledge about learning in the EFL classroom and then turn to the contributions learners can make to learning arrangements. We will discuss learning strategies, the language portfolio, questions of self assessment and concepts of self-direction.

Inhalt: Since the publication of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEF) and its adaptation to the Nationale Bildungsstandards language teachers have started to reconsider task-orientated approaches and the role of the four skills as well as of mediation in the EFL classroom. In this seminar we will look at definitions of communicative and linguistic competence (in models like the CEF) and then study samples of good practice in implementing them. The focus will be on task development for classrooms and beyond, and the aspect of assessing proficiency will also play a role.

Inhalt: Task-based language learning (TBLL), also known as Task-based language teaching (TBLT) or Task-based instruction (TBI) is an approach towards language teaching, which focuses on the use of authentic language and meaningful tasks. The learning process rather than the outcomes are emphasized. This course gives an overview of the theoretical and practical use of the approach in the English as a Foreign Language Classroom (EFL) classroom. Participants will be involved in exercises, discussions, and model lessons to obtain experience with task-based language learning and teaching.
