Introduction to Spatial Sciences (Vorlesung)

Dozent/in: Heike Zimmermann

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 12:15 - 13:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C HS 5

Inhalt: This lecture introduces a social-ecological system perspective on humans and their environment through a spatial science lens. Taking spatially explicit approaches, we will identify features and trends of society linked to location or spatial features. Thereby, this course will engage both with biophysical as well as social characteristics that relate to specific types of interactions between people and their environment. We therefore present basic concepts of Social-Ecological Systems, Human Geography, Economic Geography, Geomorphology, Soil Science, Climatology, Landscape Ecology, Spatial Planning, Mobility & Traffic, Urbanisation and Climate Adaptation to provide an overview of topics taught in the further courses of the Minor programme.

Green Guerillas - exploring greening initiatives from an ecological perspective (FSL) (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Heike Zimmermann

Termin:
wöchentlich | Montag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 14.102 a Seminarraum

Inhalt: The Green Guerillas initiative is a grassroots movement that focuses on community-driven urban gardening and greening efforts in urban environments. This initiative is characterized by its guerrilla-style tactics, where individuals or groups of volunteers take it upon themselves to transform neglected or vacant urban spaces into thriving gardens and green areas without formal permission. In this course we want to explore these kind of initiatives from an ecological perspective. What needs to be considered so that these initiatives are not pure greenwashing, but a meaningful complement to traditional conservation management? With this in mind, in this course we will, for example, examine seed bombs in terms of taxonomy, plant communities and ecological niches.

Introduction to Spatial analysis in GIS (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Heike Zimmermann

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 08:15 - 09:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | W 130a Edulab | gesamter Raum Edulab 130 a und b
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 08:15 - 09:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | W 130b Edulab | gesamter Raum Edulab 130 a und b

Inhalt: Sustainability challenges often require analysis and knowledge of spatial data like land-use or patterns and networks of infrastructure. GIS tools offer both mapping and data analysis options and are widely used in science and application. In this course, you will get to know QGIS, an open software used in both in science and the private sector. The seminar adresses the theoretical background of GIS and spatial data as well as its practical application in the software. Following topics will covered: -Coordinate systems, projections and basics of cartography -Geoprocessing with vector data -Digitizing and Georeferencing of historical maps/ aerial photos - Recording and loading geographic coordinates - Creating map layouts and printouts
