Kitsch and Camp in Games and Digital Media (Seminar)

Inhalt: The seminar investigates popular opinions, theoretical approaches and historical perspectives on objects that could be labelled “kitsch”. In what way does “high art” differ from kitsch and camp? Does the appreciation of works of art change in the course of time? Which digital games are assessed as stylish and classy and which ones as banal or as kitsch? How do we value paintings, music, games and new media that are flamboyant, overloaded with ornament and rich in decorative detail? What are the social and cultural breeding grounds for kitsch? The seminar offers a critical reading of texts by Clement Greenberg, Adolf Loos, Theo van Doesburg, Ed Simon, Călin-Andrei Mihăilescu, and others.
