Inhalt: Myths are not only an expression of cultural meaning, but also central instruments of political legitimization and mobilization. The close connection between myth and politics is particularly evident in the construction of collective identities, the stabilization or subversion of power relations and the legitimization of political narratives. The propagandistic exploitation of mythological patterns and structures (e.g. in national myths and conspiracy theories) by nationalist and right-wing populist movements in particular shows how important it is to critically reflect on the political function of myth and its continued effect in today's society. The seminar is dedicated to the question of how political myths function, what theoretical approaches exist to analyze them and how they relate to ideology, propaganda and the media landscape. Both classical myth theories (Ernst Cassirer, Th. W. Adorno, Roland Barthes) and contemporary approaches to political ideology criticism (Marshall McLuhan, Furio Jesi, Jason Josephson-Strom, Chiara Bottici) will be used. In addition, specific case studies from politics, media and popular culture are examined in order to test the analytical potential of these theories. Finally, the question is raised as to what role myths can or should still play in modern democracies.
