The Psychology of Happiness (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Meikel Soliman

wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 11:45 | 03.04.2023 - 07.07.2023 | C 12.101 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Part A When we ask people "Are you happy?" we assume that if people answer "yes" or "no," we have the same definition of happiness. However, research shows that this is not necessarily the case. Moreover, we believe we know what makes us happy. But is this knowledge true? For example, does money really (not) make us happy? Do we need the next iPhone to be happy? Current research shows that we are quite often off the mark when it comes to answering these questions. To make matters worse, our understanding of "happiness" seems to change fairly systematically every 5 to 10 years. Chasing happiness is thus a difficult endeavor. It seems more promising to search for meaning ("purpose"). Based on behavioral science research, this seminar therefore explores the psychology of purpose in Part A, asking the following questions: What is happiness and what is purpose (in life)? What is meant by the term "meaning" and how can meaning be anchored and cultivated in life? Part B Anchoring meaning in life is a difficult undertaking. Compared to happiness, meaning can hurt from time to time. For this reason, we need a method that allows us to navigate through difficult times. One way to successfully cultivate meaning in life and master negative aspects is humor. Intuitively, we seem to know this as well. Because almost everyone finds that a sense of humor is important in life. Nevertheless, humor often comes up short in everyday life, e.g., people laugh less and less as they get older - the downward trend begins when they start working and does not recover until they are about 80 years old - which is about the average life expectancy of a human being. Should we wait that long? No! Humor has many positive effects. For example, humor promotes creativity, relations between people and can make it easier to deal with strokes of fate. Above all, humor helps people become happier because stress is reduced and connections are strengthened. However, in order to use humor purposefully, we need to ask ourselves the following questions: What is humor? Why does humor increasingly disappear from our lives when we start working? How can humor be used in everyday life and in professional life? How does humor contribute to achieving happiness and meaning in life? For this reason, the seminar deals with the psychology behind meaning and humor, drawing on current behavioral science research. The seminar will also discuss concrete mechanisms of how "meaning" can be attained and cultivated. At the same time, it will be addressed how humor is not lost sight of and can be used specifically to find and cultivate meaning (and levity) in order to lead the happiest life possible.
