Inhalt: This block seminar offers an introduction to the study of international organizations (IOs) by engaging with key theoretical debates and pressing empirical challenges. It examines how IOs operate in a complex and contested global environment marked by declining support for multilateralism, reductions in funding, and conflicting demands from member states and external actors. The course also considers growing concerns about IOs’ limited capacity to respond effectively to major crises. Students will trace the historical evolution of international organizations (IOs), from post-World War II to contemporary developments, alongside key theoretical approaches. The seminar explores both formal organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as informal ones like the G20 and BRICS, which have emerged as influential actors in global governance. Throughout the course, attention is given to the design, legitimacy, and authority of international organizations, alongside the motivations driving states to engage with them. Case studies will focus on IOs’ roles in peace and security, global economic governance, and environmental sustainability, while also examining regional dynamics through organizations like the African Union and the European Union (EU). The course is designed to enhance both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding, preparing students for advanced studies in international relations and global governance.
